DIALS: The New Face of Calendar Management

As Principal Consultant of Tellus Solutions, and as a busy Business Angel who is always on-the-go, Andrew O’Dua understands the importance of being organised, especially in modern working environments.

Remote working has allowed us to be more flexible and the traditional 9-5 working day is a thing of the past for many. However, working whenever and wherever we like to has brought with it a new set of challenges, and effective diary management and being organised is key to making sure remote working succeeds for you.

So, when Andrew O’Dua was given the opportunity to invest in the DIALS app, it seemed like a natural fit. DIALS has rethought the mobile calendar and transformed the old, hard-to-read, tiny text “list view” of your day’s schedule into an elegantly designed new clock-based view of your day.

The at-a-glance display of your upcoming events, complete with simplified entry and edit process for all important meetings, calls and tasks, means DIALS is an easy way to manage your time when you’re on-the-go.

Recognising the importance of effective time management when running your own business, Andrew O’Dua said: “I work in an area where first impressions count, because of this it’s important that I am on time and prepared for any of my meetings or business commitments. I chose to invest in DIALS as personally I understand the benefits of having a clear daily view of my busy schedule and know it’s something that will resonate with other business owners.”

Well-renowned Life Coach, Tony Robbins, is one of the co-founders of the DIALS app, “having the opportunity to be involved with Tony, who like me, believes in people’s ability to chase their dreams seemed like a fitting partnership and a once in a lifetime opportunity,” concluded Andrew.

Analogue to Digital

As Principal Consultant at Tellus Solutions, Andrew O’Dua spends most of his time supporting businesses in achieving growth. But for the rest of the time, Andrew O’Dua acts as a Business Angel – investing in a wide range of up and coming businesses. Here’s the latest news from one of them:

Living in the UK, there are a number of everyday technologies which we take for granted, with digital TV being one of them. Since the introduction of the international treaty, all countries are required to switch to digital TV (DSO) from analogue. Most developing nations don’t have the technical or operating capability to achieve this, which is why Inview (a UK company based near Manchester) has put a team together that developed Freeview in the UK and is exporting this know-how and technology to achieve DSO across the World. Countries including the Philippines and Mexico are involved in the switchover, however the most notable area in which Inview has a presence is in Nigeria, where the Government has contracted Inview to build and operate the Freeview and Freesat versions for the Nigerian digital television switchover.

This type of global investment will not only provide viewers with up to 30 free channels to watch, but will create a huge economic benefit for Nigeria. Moving to digital TV offers substantial benefits to the country including expanding the digital economy through the growth of TV advertising and content production, as well as allowing the Government to sell the freed-up analogue spectrum to mobile phone operators for 3G and 4G signals.

As being of Nigerian parentage, our Principal Consultant Andrew O’Dua is hugely supportive of the investment scheme, “Government Enterprise Investment Schemes such as this, is not just about providing more channels for viewers to watch, but the economic benefits for Nigeria will be huge. It’s exciting to be a part of the development of this kind of technology in Nigeria, especially as it is coming from a local company which will now be exporting this model on a worldwide scale.”

Syndicate Room – Leading the way for investors

As Principal Consultant at Tellus Solutions, Andrew O’Dua spends most of his time supporting businesses in achieving growth. But for the rest of the time, Andrew O’Dua acts as a Business Angel – investing in a wide range of up and coming businesses. Here is a brief showcase of one of them and why we have chosen to invest in them:

As entrepreneurs we are always looking for a range of resources to help us manage our businesses more effectively and efficiently; whether that’s online, or joining networks of likeminded individuals. As a Business Angel, Andrew is keen to learn about new and existing companies wanting to expand their businesses through active investors.

Syndicate Room is a high profile network platform which allows investors to find businesses looking for investment. From start-up companies, businesses looking to be listed on the Stock Exchange, to organisations simply looking to grow, Syndicate Room is open to all businesses looking for investment.

Being an investor led platform, Syndicate Room allows investors to make an informed decision based on criteria that must be met by the businesses. For example, each company must have a lead investor already in place to be able to post their investment opportunity. That way investors have peace of mind that an experienced investor is on board, as well as the added advantage that you are offered the same investment terms, e.g. class and price of shares, as the lead investor.

As an award winning platform, Syndicate Room also organise regular events, inviting high profile guest speakers to come and speak to their members. Their next event is being held in London on 2nd February with one of the world’s most influential and best-networked people in technology and investing, Sherry Coutu.

Andrew O’Dua is not only an investor in Syndicate Room, but is also an active member. “As a business angel I find the platform, extremely useful. With a huge variety of resources, including, blogs, articles from guest writers and podcasts, there is a wealth of information available to you. I invested in Syndicate Room because I really liked their business model and it offers the support needed for both businesses and investors alike.”

Fully charged and ready to Zap&Go

As Principal Consultant at Tellus Solutions, Andrew O’Dua spends most of his time supporting businesses in achieving growth. But for the rest of the time, Andrew O’Dua acts as a Business Angel – investing in a wide range of up and coming businesses. Here’s the latest news from one of them:

We live in a world where technology has become part of our daily lives, however more often than not, we find ourselves frustrated when our trusty devices lose charge – and then take too long to recharge! Zap&Go have developed a solution to the problems encountered by all the current generation of appliances, devices and vehicles powered by lithium: slow charging. Called Carbon-IonTM, in contrast to Lithium-ion, this technology is based on carbon nano-materials including the ‘wonder-material’ graphene. Amazing!

The technology and a growing patent portfolio is in part derived from Oxford University, and in part developed independently by Zap&Go’s own scientists. The company is at the proof of concept stage with a number of prototype demonstrators with their module due to enter the production phase later this year.  To support this new phase, Zap&Go have strengthened their team and appointed four new members of staff, bringing their total team number to 20.

Zap&Go are starting the year with a bang and are exhibiting a number of prototypes ‘powered by Zap&Go’ at one of the biggest tech shows of the year- Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, from 5th-8th January.

In addition, Zap&Go was recently voted one of the 100 most promising European and Global technology companies of 2016 by online publishers Red Herring. They were the only European energy storage company to make the Red Herring list too!

As an avid technology fan, Andrew O’Dua is always excited to hear about the developments Zap&Go are making, “This is a really exciting business to be involved with. Zap&Go have not only tapped into a huge market, but are also developing a fantastic product which could revolutionise the way we use our tech. I can’t wait to see the production stages later this year!”

A New Year’s Revolution

As Principal Consultant at Tellus Solutions, Andrew O’Dua spends most of his time supporting businesses in achieving growth. But for the rest of the time, Andrew O’Dua acts as a Business Angel – investing in a wide range of up and coming businesses. Here’s the latest news from one of them:

It’s that time of year where endless New Year’s resolutions are made, most commonly the one where you vow to lose weight, get fit and generally be healthier. But then, you find that forgotten box of biscuits at the back of the cupboard, and your favourite pizza place has an offer you just can’t refuse, and it all goes out the window. But what if there was something that you would actually want to eat AND it’s healthy?!

Designed to combine healthy food and convenience together, Cauli Rice was created to encourage people to eat healthier as an alternative to rice, pasta and potatoes, whilst still maintaining the convenience the other carbohydrate options provide. In 2012, founders and clean eaters, Gem Misa and Jamie Harris, went in search of developing their own convenient Cauli Rice after discovering it didn’t exist.

After three years of development, Cauli Rice was launched in the UK, in September 2015. Just as wholesome as homemade cauliflower rice (preservative-free, gluten-free and vegan) it is the first long-life cauliflower rice available on the global market.

Keen to promote a healthy lifestyle, Andrew O’Dua is a massive fan, “Not only do I love Cauli Rice as a business, but also as a lifestyle choice. My family regularly opt for Cauli Rice as part of our diet. Gem and Jamie have created a brilliant product and their success over the past 16 months has been amazing. I am looking forward to seeing what they have planned for the coming year!”

Cell Guidance Systems (CellGS) provide innovative life science research tools and services. They identify valuable innovations from research groups around the world and develop products that address unmet needs, providing new tools that expand the possibilities of life science research.
In the last quarter, CellGS have been making significant progress in their research and have seen the commencement of two new major projects. The first of which is a £488k venture to develop PODS proteins as a vaccine. The project, which will last a year, hopes to stabilise the issue of vaccines and may even allow the development of orally administered vaccines. In addition, CellGS sponsored PhD studentship also began in October. This studentship, at Cambridge University department of Virology will last for four years and explore the use of PODS for a norovirus vaccine.
CellGS have also recently won a government grant to examine the use of PODS growth factors to treat Osteoarthritis. They are working to develop a PODS growth factor preparation that will be injected into the synovial fluid in the joints of patients with early stages of Osteoarthritis. It is hoped that this therapy will alleviate suffering and reduce the numbers of individuals who require joint replacements. The initial studies will be completed in early 2018 and, if successful, will pave the way to clinical studies.
Andrew O’Dua takes great pride in being an investor of CellGS as he explains, “The research and studies CellGS have conducted over the past 6 years since they established have been remarkable. Their work is innovative and makes a real difference to not only the life science industry, but to people all over the world. I can’t wait to see the outcome of these research projects.”
Over the coming months, CellGS is planning to launch several new products and introduce new technologies which will have a significant impact on the field of regenerative medicine.
